About Shortwood House Dementia, Elderly & Day Care Home

Shortwood House, established since 1999, is small and intimate family run residential care home in Hucknall, Nottingham, managed by Michael and Colette Thomas.

We are registered by Nottinghamshire County Council for 12 residents.

Our care home is for those who no longer feel safe or happy living on their own and want a homely and comfortable environment where they can be cared whilst maintaining their health, wellbeing and dignity.

Consistently providing exceptional care to our residents is at the heart of everything we do.

Our Aims & Objectives

Shortwood House

One of our primary goals and objectives are to allow each person to maximise their independence, whilst maintaining a strong contribution to the community.

We assess the needs of all of our residents before providing our care and services, ensuring we meet all requirements, with a strong mind that flexibility is the key to dealing with changing demands or needs.

We want to let our residents’ individualities shine through, and encourage everyone to be themselves and treat Shortwood House as their home.

We understand that living in a communal environment, as well as accepting the need for help, can feel intrusive and so we exercise every means possible to provide our residents with as much peace and privacy as possible, whilst ensuring they know we’re always on hand when needed.

To constantly maintain the high standard that our residents deserve, we have regular monthly meetings with both residents and their relatives.

These meetings give us the opportunity to hear, and address, any concerns and suggestions about all aspects of the running of our residential care home.

Our Care Staff

Shortwood House

Making our residents feel comfortable and relaxed is extremely important to us, and with Shortwood House having a very low turnover of staff, familiar faces really contribute to this.

The majority of our caring and dedicated team have been with us for over 10 years. Every member of the care team receives an in-depth induction and mandatory staff training to ensure everyone understands our important aims and objectives.

All carers are fully Dementia Pathway trained and registered Dignity Champions.

Being the small family unit that we are allows to offer the devoted and enthusiastic one-to-one care that our residents need. Our care team knows each and every resident individually, taking the time to listen, recognise and respond to their requirements.

We have two talented cooks, who pride themselves on offering healthy and diverse, home-cooked meals catering for all dietary requirements and unique tastes of our residents.

The cooks encourage residents to request personal and favourite dishes!

Our Activities & Events

Shortwood House

Here at Shortwood House care home we want our residents to live their lives to the fullest.

We want to fully understand our residents, so during the assessment process, we encourage the sharing of as much as possible about leisure, social and cultural interests.

All residents can use are encouraged to continue to partake in as many an activities as possible, both in and out of the care home, whether on their own or group activities. We feel it’s also just as important for residents to explore new horizons and experiences, interacting and socialising as much as they desire.

Residents are free to use all areas as they please. Whether they wish to sit and watch TV in one of the lounges, relax in other sitting areas, or even enjoy the grounds of the home, each resident should feel at home. We also understand the need for privacy at times and those who wish to may remain in their own rooms whenever they like.

We also have regular organised social activities including coffee mornings, birthdays, anniversaries, outings, entertainers as well as Easter and Christmas parties.

There are also regular events involving other organisations or volunteers, and specialist facilities.

We want friendships amongst residents to develop and hope that residents will enjoy being part of the friendly community we have built here, but of course there is no pressure to join in any of the communal social activities.
